About Achanakmar
Achanakmar Tiger Reserve is spread over an area of 914.01 sq. km, divided into 626.19 sq. km of core zone and 287.82 sq. km of buffer zone. Achanakmar is well linked with Kanha Tiger Reserve, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and Guru Ghansidas National Park as it is nestled between Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve, thus bearing a unique significance in wildlife conservation.
Achanakmar has a hilly terrain with dense Sal forests and lush green meadows. River Maniyari, a tributary of the mighty Mahanadi river is the lifeline of Achanakmar. It originates from Sinhawal Sagar inside the Tiger Reserve .
The food chain of the local ecosystem offers a rich prey base of Bison, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer and Sambar Deer to the predators found here. Achanakmar is home to over 170 species of birds and a variety of predators – The Tiger, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Jungle Cat etc. The Sanctuary landscape is dominated by Sal trees. Bamboo, Dhaura, Senha, Gunja ,Tendu and Arjun are other significantly-found tree species in the sanctuary.
Achanakmar’s rich vegetation, plains and hills are still untouched and unexplored. It offers wildlifers and researchers an opportunity to discover many rare species which are yet not in record of the Zoological Survey of India.
